Late on September 8, a series of Israeli strikes hit several sites in the Masyaf area of Hama Governorate in Syria’s central region.
The airstrikes led to death of at least 16 people. 36 others were also wounded, including 6 in critical condition.
A Syrian military source stated, “At around 23:20 on Sunday evening, 9/8/2024, the Israeli enemy launched an air aggression from the direction of northwest Lebanon, targeting a number of military sites in the central region. Our air defense systems confronted the aggression’s missiles and shot down some of them.”
It is said that one of the positions pounded by the Israeli warplane is a military base southwest of the city of Masyaf. After Israeli missiles hit the Syrian military base, the plants around the facility caught fire.
Concurrent with the Israeli airstrikes on Masyaf, local sources reported an airstrike in Tartus port. However, it was later revealed that the sound of explosions in Tartus was caused by the activation of the Syrian army’s air defense systems to intercept the Israeli missiles, and the fall of Syrian defensive missiles wreckage in the city caused some material damage.
Director of Communications in Hama, Munib al-Asfar stated the Israeli aggression on several areas in the Masyaf countryside caused the disruption of the optical cable on the Hama-Masyaf road, the disruption of the communications center of Wadi al-Uyun, al-Marha, and Sheeha. Work is underway to repair this damage.
The Israeli strikes also led to damage to electricity and water projects in the area. The main pumping and drainage water lines towards the Masyaf ground reservoir, and the electrical supply line to the Al-Juraifat wells that supply the city of Masyaf, and the electrical supply line to the Khan Jalmidoun wells and the wells of the city of Salhab were seriously damaged.
Also, rumors have been circulated by the Israeli media about Iranian IRGC forces being targeted. The spokesman of the Iranian Foreign Ministry strongly denied this claim.
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Lebanese Hezbollah and other factions of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
Four Syrian troops were wounded last month when a series of Israeli strikes hit several military sites in central Syria.
Since the start of the war on Gaza, Israeli strikes on Syria have claimed the lives of more than 37 civilians. Still, the war-torn country has so far refrained from directly responding.
