On March 8, the USS Dwight D. Eisenhower carrier strike group entered the Mediterranean Sea after passing the Strait of Gibraltar. The US military presence in the region grew as tensions are on the rise in Syria and Iraq following the recent US strike on Iranian-backed forces on the Syrian-Iraqi border and the increase in number of attacks on US supply convoys and military targets in Iraq.
