US Supply Convoy Attacked On Iraq’s Border With Kuwait

On October 13, a convoy moving logistic supplies and vehicles for the US-led coalition came under attack in the southern Iraqi province of Basrah.

The supply convoy was targeted with an unidentified weapon, most likely an implosive explosive device, after it crossed the Jraischan border gate coming from Kuwait.

A pro-Iranian Iraqi group calling itself the “Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis Regiments” quickly claimed responsibility for the attack.

In a statement, the group, which emerged in September, claimed that the convoy was moving several Humvee armored vehicles donated by the US to Kurdish Peshmerga forces in the Iraqi Kurdistan Region. The group said that the attack was a response to a recent Erbil summit that promoted normalization with Israel.

The Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis Regiments is one of several pro-Iranian groups which were formed in Iraq after the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani.

This was not the first time a US-led coalition supply convoy was targeted near Iraq’s border with Kuwait. On July 11, a convoy came under attack near Jraischan gate. On August 27, a rocket attack targeted several convoys near the Safwan border crossing.
