A US service member was killed and two others were wounded in an “apparent insider attack” in southern Afghanistan on July 7, the NATO said in a statement.
“The wounded service members, who are in stable condition, are currently being treated. The incident is under investigation,” the statement reads.
Insider attacks, also known as “green-on-blue” attacks, are incidents in which Afghan forces fire on NATO troops with whom they are working. The July 7 incident is the first such killing in nearly a year.
The NATO did not release the identity of the soldier killed or details of the incident.
According to AFP news agency, citing a local police officer, the attack took plcae at the airport in Tarinkot, the capital of Uruzgan province.
The Taliban also commented on the matter.
“A patriot Afghan soldier opened fire on Americans in Uruzgan airport killing and wounding at least four American invaders,” the movement said.
There are about 14,000 US troops in Afghanistan, providing the main component of the NATO mission in the war-torn country.
