On April 9, the US-led coalition reinforced two of its main bases in the Syrian governorate of Deir Ezzor, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
Local sources told the state-run agency that two convoys carrying weapons, large quantities of ammunition and military equipment entered the US-led coalition’s bases in the Conoco gas field in the eastern Deir Ezzor countryside and al-Omar oil fields in the southeastern countryside of the governorate.
A day earlier, an indirect fire attack targeted the US-led coalition’s base in al-Omar oil fields, which is known as the Green Village base. Four American service members were wounded as a result of the attack. Iranian-backed forces situated in the government-held part of Deir Ezzor were allegedly behind the attack.
According to SANA’s sources, the newly-deployed reinforcements are meant to improve security at the coalition’s bases in Conoco and al-Omar.
The US-led coalition has been working to strengthen its security measures in Deir Ezzor for a while now. Very recently, the coalition launched a surveillance blimp from its base in the Conoco gas plant, which is located a few kilometers to the north of al-Omar oil fields.
Despite facing growing threats, the US is not planning to withdraw its troops from Syria anytime soon. During a recent press briefing at the Pentagon, Gen. Frank McKenzie, commander of the US Central Command, told reporters that he doesn’t know for how long US troops will remain in Syria.
