United States Central Command (CENTCOM) forces destroyed five missiles of the Houthis (Ansar Allah) in separate strikes on Yemen within 48 hours, the command announced in two separate statements.

According to the command, three missiles on launchers were targeted in Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen on July 23 and two more were hit on July 24.

“It was determined these weapons presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said. “These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure.”

The command didn’t provide any details on the type of the targeted missiles or reveal when and where exactly they were struck.

The strikes came less than a week after a Houthi suicide drone struck the Israeli city of Tel Aviv, killing a man and wounding at least eight others. Israel responded by launching its first ever attack on Yemen. Israeli strikes hit the Houthi-held Res Sea port of al-Hodeida. Six people were killed and over 80 others were wounded. The Houthis vowed to strike back.

Since November, the Houthis, who are backed by Iran, have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, Gulf of Aden, Arabian Sea, Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at Israel and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.

The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its military capabilities, but to no avail.
