The Ukrainian military has no tank brigade left as they were all reorganized, sources in the Russian law enforcement agencies told TASS on August 2.
“There is not a single tank brigade left in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. According to Ukrainian Telegram channels, the 4th separate tank brigade of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has been reorganized into a separate heavy mechanized brigade,” a source said.
The 17th separate tank brigade, which was defeated near Olgovka in the Kursk direction in the winter of 2024, was also reorganized into a heavy mechanized brigade, the source added, noting that according to the accounts of captured Ukrainian soldiers, the brigade was sorely short of armored vehicles, which is why the tankers were used as regular infantry without cover.
The source went on to explain that the re-formation of the brigades cannot be called a promotion, because they lose the tank battalion when it changes into a mechanized one.
“Apparently, there are big problems with the supply of heavy armored vehicles to the Armed Forces of Ukraine, but do you remember how happy they were with the Western Leopard and Abrams tanks? Where are they all now?” the source said.
The Russian Ministry of Defense says that Ukraine has lost more than 24,000 armored vehicles, including main battle tanks, since the start of the special military operation more than three years ago. Other sources specify that Ukraine has so far lost over 1,200 tanks.
Last month, Australia said that it had delivered the majority of the 49 pledged American-made M1A1 Abrams main battle tanks to Ukraine.
The tanks will likely last to the end of the year. Aside from these tanks, there has been no major pledges to rearm Kiev’s tank brigades.
Most of Soviet-era tanks in Europe were shipped to Ukraine early on in the conflict, and later on most separable Leopard 1/2 and Challenger 2 tanks were sent.
Ukraine’s backers could still ship a few dozen tanks to Ukraine from here and there sometime later. However, it is not completely illogical to assume that the Ukrainian military will not be able to build any credible ground offensive capabilities any time soon.
