The Russian military had destroyed three Ukrainian assault groups west of Orekhov in the Zaporozhye Region, acting governor Yevgeny Balitsky said on August 5.
According to the governor, the Ukrainian strike group attempted to launch an attack against Russian positions close to Rabotino.
“At the same time, our aerial reconnaissance detected the concentration of three assault groups to the west of Orekhov. All groups were destroyed, the remaining Ukrainian fighters withdrew in the northern direction,” Balitsky wrote on his Telegram channel.
Video footage from this direction showed a destroyed German-made Leopard 2 tank as well as recent drone and helicopter strikes on Ukrainian positions and vehicles.
In the Donetsk direction, the Russian Vostok Group of Forces foiled an attempt to rotate Ukrainian units near Nikolskoye in the Donetsk People’s Republic (DPR), the group’s spokesman Oleg Chekhov said.
“The units of the eastern battlegroup thwarted the enemy’s attempt to rotate units northeast of the Nikolskoye settlement. The fighters who arrived for the rotation were destroyed,” the spokesman told TASS.
Chekhov added that a Ukrainian reconnaissance group was detected and destroyed by the group to the northwest of the Priyutnoye.
In addition, the group’s artillery destroyed a Ukrainian control center for drones in the Novodonetsk region, the spokesman said.
“Rocket-launching artillery fire destroyed the command post for unmanned aircraft of the Ukrainian armed forces in the Novodonetsk region and the Msta-B towed howitzer in the Novoivanovka region,” he said.
Chekhov also noted that artillery fire destroyed an electronic warfare station west of Zolotaya Niva, a mortar crew of the Kiev forces northwest of Novodonetsk, and a grenade launcher crew north of Urozhaynoye.
He added that Russian Lancet loitering munitions destroyed two Ukrainian Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers in the Donetsk region.
“Lancet loitering ammunition destroyed two Gvozdika self-propelled howitzers in the areas northwest of Ravnopol and Velyka Novoselka,” the spokesman said.
In the Krasny Liman direction, the artillery and aviation of the Russian Tsentr Group of Forces foiled several attacks close to Torskoye and the Serebryansky forest. Ukrainian losses amounted to 90 troops, an infantry fighting vehicle, two armored vehicles and two mortars.
Moreover, the group’s air defenses shot down four drones and its aviation struck two enemy strongholds near Torskoye and Serebryanka.
It’s worth noting that early on August 5, Russian maritime rescue units were deployed early assist an oil tanker off the coast of Crimea. The vessel, identified as Sig, was left without propulsion after what reports said was a strike by an Ukrainian naval drone.
“The crew is safe, there were no injuries,” a spokesperson for the Novorossiysk Marine Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) told TASS, shortly after 2 am local time. “The engine room was damaged, though not severely.”
Ukraine confirmed its responsibility for the attack and even released a video showing the tanker being hit by a suicide naval drone while sailing in the Kerch Strait.
With the ninth week of Ukraine’s counteroffensive nearing its end, very little has changed on the battlefield. Kiev forces continue to sustain heavy human and material losses while making no meaningful gains in any direction.
