The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) announced on June 21 that its forces destroyed more drones of the Iran-backed Houthis (Ansar Allah) over the past 24 hours.
In a statement, the command said that four uncrewed surface vessels were destroyed in the Red Sea and two uncrewed aerial systems were intercepted over its waters. It noted that there were no injuries or damage reported by U.S., coalition, or merchant vessels.
“It was determined these systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said. “These actions were taken to protect freedom of navigation and make international waters safer and more secure for U.S., coalition, and merchant vessels.”
The Houthis didn’t announce any attacks in the Red Sea in the last 24 hours. There were no reports of any incidents in waters near Yemen.
Since last November, the Houthis have attacked dozens of vessels affiliated with Israel or owned by the U.S. and the United Kingdom in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, the Arabian Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea in response to the Israeli war and siege on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.
In addition, the group launched dozens of drones and missiles at the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and shot down six American-made combat drones over Yemen and nearby waters.
The U.S. and the UK have carried out hundreds of strikes against Houthi-controlled areas in Yemen since January in an attempt to deter the group and degrade its offensive capabilities, but to no avail.
