Late on April 16, two people were wounded when the Turkish military and its proxies shelled the Christian town of Tell Tawil in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah.

Tell Tawil, which is located near the town of Tell Tamer, is held by the Syriac Military Council, a faction of the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF). The Turkish indiscriminate shelling damaged several houses as well as the town’s only church.

According to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, during the shelling a Turkish combat drone targeted a position of a local Christian force known as Nattoreh in Tell Tawil.

The London-based group said that one of the two people wounded in the Turkish attack on Tell Tawil is a fighter of Nattoreh.

A similar Turkish attack was reported in the northern countryside of Raqqa. The Turkish military and its proxies shelled the SDF-held village of Mullak and Saida as well as the M4 highway near the town of Ain Issa. However, the Turkish shelling didn’t result in any losses.

Turkish forces and the SDF have been exchanging blows in Syria’s northern and northeastern regions for nearly two months now.

On April 9, a Turkish drone strike hit a position of the SDF border guards in the northern countryside of al-Hasakah. The strike claimed the life of an SDF member and wounded two others. On April 14, the SDF responded by targeting a vehicle of Turkey’s proxies in the northern countryside of Aleppo with a guided missile. The attack killed two Turkish-backed militants.

The recent Turkish attacks on the SDF indicate that Ankara may be preparing for a new military operation in northern and northeastern Syria.
