An active-duty soldier and a reservist of the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) were wounded on October 18 in a rare attack on the border with Jordan.

The attack took place near the border settlement of Neot HaKikar to the south of the Dead Sea. It began when observation soldiers from the IDF’s 727th Battalion spotted two gunmen along the border. Troops were then quickly dispatched to the area.

The two gunmen opened fire at the Israeli troops, injuring two. The troops then killed the gunmen a few meters away from the border fence.

The active-duty soldier was slightly wounded, and the reservist moderately hurt, according to Hebrew media. Both were evacuated to a hospital.

Following the attack IDF and police blocked roads in the area and launched ground and air searches for a possible third gunman.

Initially, it was reported that the gunmen were service members of the Jordanian Armed Forces. However, Jordanian media later identified them as civilians Amer Qawas and Hussam Abu Ghazaleh. The two were reportedly members of the Jordanian branch of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Videotaped wills of Qawas and Abu Ghazaleh surfaced on social networks later, with the pair stating that their attack was carried out in response to the Israeli war on the Palestinian enclave of the Gaza Strip.

The security situation on the Israeli-Jordanian border appears to be deteriorating as a result of the war on Gaza, which has so far claimed the lives of more than 42,000 Palestinaisn. On September 18, a Jordanian truck driver opened fire at the Allenby Bridge crossing, killing three Israelis. The attack was a response to the Israeli war on the Strip.
