The Syrian Constitutional Committee will be formed in the upcoming few days, Turkey’s Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu revealed on February 3.
“We are seeking to give impetus to the Geneva process, we are promoting the Astana and Sochi processes. In the coming days, the Constitutional Committee will be set up comprising representatives of the civil society, supporters of [Syrian President] Bashar Assad and the opposition,” the Anadolu Agency quoted Cavusoglu as saying.
The decision to form the Constitutional Committee was agreed during the Syrian National Dialogue Congress, which was held in the Russian city of Sochi on January 30, 2018. The U.N. is directly sponsoring and overseeing the formation of the committee.
Last December, several sources reported that the committee was close to formation. However, these efforts were blocked by the UK, Germany and France, as Russia’s President Vladimir Putin revealed recently.
Russia, Iran and Turkey are set to hold a new round of talks in Sochi on February 14. The formation of the Syrian Constitutional Committee will likely be announced before or during the talks.
