The Syrian Arab Army (SAA) neutralized a group of militants in a special operation in the northern Hama countryside, the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA) reported on September 14. According to the state-run news agency, the militants were building fortifications near the town of al-Janabirah.

Syrian opposition activists revealed that a senior commander of Faylaq al-Rahman, named “Abo Omar al-Dimashqi,” was killed in the SAA operation along with several other militants. Al-Dimashqi led Faylaq al-Rahman used  to operate in the district of Jobar, east of the city of Damascus, for five years before withdrawing to northern Syria under an evacuation agreement last May.

The SAA shelled several positions of radical groups such as Jaysh al-Izza, Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Turkistan Islamic Party (TIP) in northern Hama and southern Idlib over the last few days.

Pro-government activists argue that these limited operations are a part of the SAA final preparations to launch a large-scale offensive against the remaining militants in northwestern Syria.
