Israel appears to be getting more frustrated as Syria inches closer towards reclaiming its leading position in the Arab World.

The recent Israeli attacks on the war-torn country coincided with major breakthroughs in Damascus’ relations with key Arab players in the Middle East which were once seen as sympathetic with Tel Aviv’s case against the so-called “Axis of Resistance.”

On March 19, a senior commander and engineer of the Palestinian Islamic Jihad, 31-year-old Ali Ramzi al-Aswad, was gunned down near Damascus. Israeli intelligence was blamed for the assassination.
The Palestinian Islamic Jihad is the main Palestinian ally of Syria. The group maintains a political and military presence in the country. From there, it coordinates with other members of the “Axis of Resistance,” including Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanon’s Hezbollah.

On the same day of the assassination, Syrian President Bashar al Assad arrived in the United Arab Emirates on an official visit, accompanied by his wife Asma al Assad. Abu Dhabi established official relations with Israel just three years earlier as a part of the United States-brokered Abrahama Accords. Despite this, its relations with Damascus are getting stronger.

Later on March 22, a series of Israeli strikes hit Aleppo International Airport in northern Syria, placing it out of service for the second time in a few weeks. The main target was reportedly underground depots at the adjacent Nairab military airport, where Iranian-made missiles were stored. No casualties were reported as a result of the attack. The UAE condemned the attack, in its first such move ever.

A day after the strike, March 23, a report by Reuters revealed that Syria and Saudi Arabia had reached a breakthrough agreement to reopen their embassies. An unnamed regional source aligned with Damascus told the news agency that talks between Damascus and Riyadh had gained momentum after the recent China-brokered agreement that restored Saudi-Iranian relations.

According to a report by the Wall Street Journal, the Syrian-Saudi agreement was brokered by Russia. Talks were then held between Moscow and Riyadh.

Unlike the UAE, Saudi Arabia does not have direct relations with Israel. However, Riyadh was once considered a part of the same U.S.-backed axis as Tel Aviv.

All in all, it appears that the Middle East is witnessing dramatic political changes. Syria is playing a key role as it is now seen as a bridge between Iran and the Arab World. The recent increase in Israeli attacks on the country reflects a level of frustration from these recent developments. Damascus’ return to the so-called Arab Fold could facilitate an end to the war, which would limit Tel Aviv’s ability to act against the country as it has before.
