Israeli fighter jets fired two missiles from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights at targets near the Syrian capital, Damascus, on November 22 afternoon, the official SANA news agency reported, citing a military official.
The official said that Syrian air defenses shot down one of the missiles, while the second caused “material losses,” without providing any details.
Videos posted to social media showed smoke rising from the town of Set Zaynab to the south of Damascus, where Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanese Hezbollah are known to be present and active. No casualties were reported.
In the early morning there were reports of Israeli strikes on military positions in the outskirts of Damascus. However, the SANA didn’t report any attack.
Israel escalated its attacks on Syria significantly since the outbreak of the war with the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.
Strikes attributed to Israel have hit Aleppo and Damascus airports several times in recent weeks, placing them both out of service. In addition, the Israeli military struck southern Syria more than once in response to rocket attacks that targeted Golan.
On November 10, seven fighters of Hezbollah were killed when an Israeli strike hit the outskirts of the city of Homs. At the time, Israel said that the strike was carried out in response to a drone attack that targeted its southernmost city of Eilat a day earlier, but it didn’t confirm that the drone was launched from Syria. Hassan Nasrallah, Secretary General of Hezbollah, praised the attack without claiming responsibility.
Syria has largely refrained from responding to Israel’s repeated attacks over the past decade in an attempt to avoid a full-blown war.
