On July 18 morning, a mysterious strike targeted the border line between Syria and Iraq, where Iranian-backed forces are known to be deployed.
The pinpoint strike destroyed a Toyota pickup truck of the Iraqi Popular Mobilization Units (PMU). No human losses were reported as a result of the strike.
The UAE-based al-Arabiya TV reported that the targeted truck was loaded with weapons and ammunition. However, sources close to the PMU said that the truck was carrying logistic supplies.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, the strike was carried out by a US combat drone. These claims are yet to be confirmed.
This was not the first strike that targeted the Syrian-Iraqi border line this year. On May 22, a combat drone hit a vehicle in the western region of Iraq, near the border with Syria. The vehicle, also a Toyota pickup truck, was allegedly carrying weapons. Late on July 13, a similar strike allegedly targeted a military crossing on the border.
The US and Israel have targeted Iranian-backed forces guarding the Syrian-Iraqi border line on several occasions in the last few years.
All recent strikes on the Syrian-Iraqi border line were either meant to stop Iranian weapons shipments to Syria, or were carried out in response to attacks on US troops by Iranian-backed forces.
