In 2018, terror attacks in Egypt fell to its lowest number since 2013, the country’s State Information Service (SIS) said on December 31. The SIS stressed that most of attacks in 2018 were primitive IED attacks, with some of them failing to achieve their aims. The report attributed the fall to a major counterterrorism operation, Operation Sinai 2018, launched in February.
The report claims that there were only 8 terrorist attacks in 2018 while in 2014 this number was 222. Most likely, the SIS got this number by ignoring most of terrorist attacks, including IED attacks, on army troops in North Sinai. While there are little doubts that Operation Sinai 2018 resulted in decrease of the terrorist activity in the country, the situation in the region remains complciated and terrorists are still capable of conducting attacks on governemtn targets.
