Late on August 29, ISIS terrorists attacked a post of the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) on the Syrian-Iraqi border.

According to a statement by the Amaq news agency, the terrorists managed to storm the post that is located near the town of al-Twimin in the southern countryside of al-Hasakah. Iraqi government forces intervened quickly, forcing the terrorists to withdrew.

During the attack, ISIS terrorists captured five AK-47-type assault rifles along with their ammunition from SDF fighters.

Amaq claimed that five fighters of the SDF were killed in the attack. However, the London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported only four casualties.

ISIS cells are known to be active in the southern al-Hasakah countryside and in the western Iraqi province of al-Anbar. However, they usually avoid launching attacks on the border line between the two countries.

The attack on al-Twimin post signs a significant escalation of the conflict. ISIS is apparently attempting to reestablish its forces on the Syrian-Iraqi border, which witnessed the birth of its “Caliphate” in 2014.
