On November 18, a senior intelligence officer of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) was stabbed to death in the western Iranian province of Kermanshah.
According to the semi-official Tasnim News Agency, the officer, identified as Colonel Nader Beirami, was in charge of the IRGC intelligence service in the city of Sahneh. He was stabbed in the heart while trying to protect a pedestrian against protesters who were rioting during an event in commemoration of a local artist in the city.
Sahneh’s Governor Jahanbakhsh Zanganeh-Tabar said that those involved in the deadly stabbing attack were immediately arrested by security forces.
In a separate attack, two personnel of Iranian security forces were killed in the city of Bukan in the western province of Azerbaijan Province, according to the Islamic Republic News Agency.
Protests have been ongoing in different parts of Iran since the September 16 death of a 22-year-old Iranian-Kurdish woman Mahsa Amini who was being held by the country’s morality police. The protests led to a wave of violence that has so far claimed the lives of dozens of civilians and security personnel, according to Iranian authorities.
A shooting attack that took place following protests in the southwestern province Khuzestan on November 16 claimed the lives of five people and wounded at least 15 others. On the same day, gunmen shot dead two members of Iran’s paramilitary Basij in the central city of Isfahan.
Iran’s top officials have repeated warned the United States and its allies in Europe and the Middle East against supporting the protests and inciting violence on its territory.
