Saudi Arabia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs Adel bin Ahmed Al-Jubeir said that Saudi Arabia would seek to develop its own nuclear weapons if Iran uses the US withdrawal from the 2015 Iran deal as a pretext to renew a nuclear weapons program, CNN reported on May 9.
“We will do whatever it takes to protect our people. We have made it very clear that if Iran acquires a nuclear capability we will do everything we can to do the same,” Adel Al-Jubeir stressed.
The Saudi minister praised US President Donald Trump’s May 8 announcement that the US withdraws from the Iran nuclear deal.
Adel Al-Jubeir criticized the agreement’s points that expire in 2025 and 2030 and the fact that its matter is limited to nuclear issues.
“We believe the deal does not deal with Iran’s ballistic missile program nor does it deal with Iran’s support for terrorism.”
CNN also noticed that the White House has been pursuing a deal to sell nuclear reactors to Riyadh despite the Saudi reluctance to accept restrictions against nuclear proliferation.
In March, Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud warned of the possible military conflict with Iran and made an appeal to impose severe sanctions on Tehran.
