Russians Won Battle For Guevo, Push Ukrainians From Last Strongholds in Kursk Region

Swedish SV-90 IFV destroyed in the Kursk region

As the new day begins, Russian forces have made notable progress in the Kursk region, pushing forward on multiple fronts amid intense fighting. On April 8, the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation officially confirmed the full control of the village of Guevo in the Kursk region.

The Russian army secured control of Guevo. Despite their heavy losses, the command of the Armed Forces of Ukraine stubbornly tried to resist in the village. The advancing Russian forces of the North group of forces were opposed by elite Ukrainian formations, including the special operations forces, combined airborne assault units reinforced by neo-Nazi militants from 129 unit of the Territorial defense.

During the fierce battle for Guevo, which lasted for more than 10 days, Russian fighters not only to crush Ukrainian military elite, but also to secure the evacuation of the civilian population, which the Ukrainians tried to use as a human shield.

Advancing from the recently liberated village of Guevo, Russian units have made gains in the direction of Gornal. Reports indicate successful movement north of the village, with troops securing key terrain and attempting to push further. Additionally, assault groups have completed the mop up operations in the forests north of Gornal, expanding their control over the area.

The open fields surrounding Gornal present a tactical challenge for Ukrainian defenders, who lack natural cover. The defending Ukrainian forces are trying to urgently build a layered defense in the Guevo-Gornal direction, hoping to use the heights like the local Mount Fagor to control the movements of Russian assault groups. Russian troops are approaching the local St. Nicholas monastery, which Ukrainian forces turned into a stronghold.

If Russian forces maintain momentum, they could threaten Ukrainian positions in the settlement with assault in the nearest future. Russian advances are gradually encircling Ukrainian troops, with forest belts and open terrain favoring further progress.

To the north, Ukrainian forces are fiercely resisting near Oleshnya. Together with Gornal, these are the last settlements in the Kursk region under their control. Afraid of further Russian offensive in the Sumy region, the Ukrainian military is throwing reinforcements to the border battles. Elements of the 95th Air Assault Brigade and 1st Tank Brigade were spotted reinforcing  Ukrainian defense in the area. It should not be excluded that Ukrainian forces are also preparing counterattacks to hold their positions.

The situation remains fluid, but current developments indicate Russian forces are maintaining the upper hand in the border areas, while Ukrainian troops focus on defending Oleshnya.
