Russian Troops Took Control Of Vershina Near Bakhmut

On August 17, Russian-led forces took control of the village of Vershina. The gains were confirmed by the Headquarters of Territorial Defence of the Donetsk People’s Republic.

So far, DPR and LPR troops, with the fire support of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation, liberated 268 settlements on the territory of the Donetsk People’s Republic, including Vershina.

The first reports about the DPR control of the settlement came on August 14. The village of Vershina is located to the east of Zaitsevo, near Kodema and Klenovo, on the south-eastern outskirts of Bakhmut.

Assault groups entered the settlement back in late July, and after weeks of fierce clashes, the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU) were forced to withdraw from their positions. Advance of Russian-led forces in the area was complicated by a large network of trenches, which had been created during eight years of war. Fighters of the Wagner group took an active part in the assault.

Russian advance to the south-east of Bakhmut allows them to attack Ukrainian forces in the city from several directions. Russian-led forces have already entered the eastern outskirts of Bakhmut and managed to establish a foothold there.

The Zaitsevo settlement is the next target of the Russian military, which will further strengthen the position of the Russian troops in this direction. The assault groups passed through the village of Vershina and clashes reached the town of Zaitsevo the last week. The AFU are hastily retreating to Bakhmut and Konstantinovka.
