The Russian military carried out a group strike by high precision long-range sea-based weaponry at a training site for pilots and engineers of Kiev forces, the Russian Ministry of Defense announced on June 23.
“The goal of the strike has been achieved,” the ministry said in its daily briefing. “All the assigned objects have been destroyed.”
The Ukrainian capital, Kiev, its surrounding region and several others across the country were under air raid alerts for about an hour in the early morning. Later, a series of blasts were heard over and near the city.
Mykola Oleshchuk, the commander of the Ukrainian Air Force, claimed on Telegram that air defenses in the Kiev region had shot down two out of three Kalibr cruise missiles launched by the Russian Navy. Still, casualties and losses were reported in the capital.
A video posted to social networks showed what appears to be multiple Russian Kalibr cruise missiles flying at a very low altitude towards Kiev.
The group strike was likely a response to a wave of Ukrainian attacks that killed a civilian in the Russian region of Belgorod, three others in the Donetsk People’s Republic and damaged facilities of the in the Russian-run Zaporozhye Nuclear Power Plant a day earlier.
It’s worth noting that the Russian military resumed group strikes against military infrastructure and affiliated power facilities in Ukraine last March in response to repeated attempts by the Kiev regime to attack civilians and infrastructure in Russia.
