The statements of a former Deputy Director of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), Michael Morell, on the need to covertly kill Russians and Iranians in Syria are statements in the style of the Islamic State (IS) terrorist group, the RIA Novosti news agency reported, citing spokesman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova.
“These statements are not just inhuman. These words are in the style of the Islamic State terrorists, they say like this,” she said. According Zakharova, Morell’s words shocked not only the Russian government, but also the US State Department.
At the beginning of August, speaking on the CBS News TV channel, Morell said that the settlement of the Syrian conflict needs “covertly” killing of Russians and Iranians. “When we were in Iraq, the Iranians were giving weapons to the Shia militia, who were killing American soldiers, right?” Morell said. “We need to make the Iranians pay a price in Syria. We need to make the Russians pay a price,” he said.
Morell also noted that killing of Russians and Iranians should be conducted covertly, without announcing this to the entire world, but it is indispensable to “make sure they know about this in Moscow and Tehran.”
Against the background of an indistinct official position of the US State Department, public statements of some retired US officials and experts are a marker of the real level of the US attitude to various issues. For this reason, the Russian Foreign Ministry comments such statements.
