The Ukrainian military continues attempts to contain as many Russian troops as possible by fighting along the border. While Ukrainian offensive was stopped in the Kursk region, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launch attacks in the border areas nerby despite heavy losses.
On the morning of August 12, another Ukrainian assault group attempted attack in the Belgorod region. The assault was launched on the Kolotilovka border crossing in the Krasnoyaruzhskiy district located near the Kursk region. Kolotilovka was the last acting border crossing where Russia and Ukraine exchanged prisoners of war and bodies of the dead. The checkpoint building was recently completely burned out as a result of the strike of a Ukrainian drone.
According to local reports, on the early morning of August 12, the AFU shelled the checkpoint, after which about 50 Ukrainian militants launched attack with the support of six T-64B tanks and other armored vehicles, including those supplied by NATO.
Russian border guards and military personnel accepted the battle, together with the Russian Aerospace Forces.
As a result of fighting, the Ukrainian military suffered losses and main forces retreated. According to preliminary reports, the Armed Forces of Ukraine lost about seven servicemen killed and about 15 more were wounded. Russian forces also reportedly destroyed several armored vehicles of the Ukrainian grouping. The retreating Ukrainian forces abandoned several vehicles on the battlefield.
Some Ukrainian servicemen remain near the checkpoint trying to hold control of the positions.
In the afternoon, the AFU units attempted another attack to the south, in the area of Vysokoye. They failed and retreated.
Later, another attack by small forces was repelled near Kolotilovka.
Another Ukrainian assault failed but the situation remains tense in the Krasnoyaruzhskiy district. The Russian military is sending reinforcement to the area, preparing for another possible Ukrainian offensive.
The local authorities began evacuation of civilians who remained in the settlements in the border district. Earlier, a counter-terrorism operation regime has been introduced in the Kursk, Belgorod and Bryansk regions.
Today, another Ukrainian group was destroyed in the area of the village of Giryi in the Kursk region.
The day before, the Armed Forces of Ukraine launched another attack in an attempt to break into the village of Bezymeno in the Grayvoronsky district. After the loss of the armored personnel carrier, Ukrainian forces retreated.
