On February 28, Ukrainian special forces attempted a landing operation on the thin Tendrov Spit in the Kherson region, which is under the control of the Russian military.
Fighters of the 73rd separate naval center from the AFU “South” grouping were met by the Russian special forces of the Baltic Fleet. As a result of the battle the group of professional Ukrainian servicemen was destroyed.
According to preliminary reports, the Ukrainian military lost 20 servicemen killed, one serviceman was taken prisoner. In total, four Ukrainian boats were reportedly destroyed, one more boat managed to escape. The landing operation was supported by Ukrainian UAVs. As a result of the drone strike, two Russian servicemen were wounded. Footage from the area confirmed heavy losses of the Ukrainian military:
The Tendrov Spit is an island with an area of 38 square kilometers, located on the northwestern coast of the Black Sea in the Kherson region. Control of this area would allow the AFU to attack the Russian military positions in the Kherson region from the southern flank and launch strikes on the northwestern part of Crimea. The possibility of Ukrainian attempts to launch assault operations on the spit were considered as one of the supplementary directions of Ukrainian offensive in the Kherson region. Massive Ukrainian attacks there could bring some results, since the area does not allow the deployment of any heavy military equipment there; but, on the other hand, the Ukrainian army should also risk large forces in an attempt to gain a foothold there.
In one of his recent interviews, Zelensky threatened Russia with some “surprises” in the Black Sea. If the AFU attempted to capture the Russian military by surprise with today’s attack, they failed. the defeat of the Ukrainian special forces showed that Russian forces are closely watching the military manoeuvres of the enemy and are holding control of all their territories.
