The Russian military has targeted and destroyed yet another American-made M1A1 SA Abrams main battle tank of Kiev forces.
Video footage showed the tank being hit by an FPV suicide drone surfaced online on May 6. The strike set the ammunition stored in the rear of the tank turret on fire, effectively destroying it. The tank was likely demobilized by a previous strike when it was killed by the drone.
It is still unclear where the tank was destroyed. However, Kiev forces have been mainly using Abrams tanks to the northwest of the city of Avdeevka in the Donetsk direction.
The United States supplied Ukraine with 31 Abrams over the past year. Russian sources claim that more than a third of the tanks have already been destroyed or damaged. Two of these tanks were also captured by the Russian military. All the losses were near Avdeevka.
Earlier this year, Ukraine withdrew all Abrams tanks from the front as the result of the excessive use of drones by the Russian military, which made it too difficult for the tanks to operate without detection or coming under attack, according to The Associated Press.
However, the rapid advance of the Russian military to the northwest of Avdeevka forced Kiev forces, which are running low on equipment, to redeploy the tanks,
A recent CNN report acknowledged that the tank performed poorly in Ukraine and revealed that Kiev forces have been struggling just to keep their remaining Abrams operational.
