Russian air defenses intercepted 12 American-made MGM-140 ATACMS tactical ballistic missiles which were launched by Kiev forces at the Crimean Peninsula over the night of August 15 and 16, the Ministry of Defense announced.
“Air defenses were used last night to deflect a group strike by 12 ATACMS missiles made in the United States on the Crimean bridge. All the missiles were destroyed,” the ministry said in a briefing.
During the attack, RIA Novosti reported that traffic on the Crimean Bridge was temporarily blocked. However, no casualties or material losses.
Also overnight, Russian air defenses intercepted five suicide drones over the Black Sea. Two uncrewed suicide boats which were moving in towards Crimea were also destroyed by naval forces. Video footage showing the engagement in the Black Sea was released.
The Kiev regime has attacked the Crimean Bridge more than once since the start of the Russian special military operation in Ukraine two years ago. In recent months, the regime intensified attacks on Crimea and other Russian regions in an attempt to make up for the recent defeats of its forces.
Last month, Kiev forces launched a number of ATACMS missiles at Sevastopol. Submunitions from the missiles’ cluster warheads hit a crowded beach, killing four civilians and injuring more than 150 others. Russia said that the U.S. was complicit in the bloody attack.
The latest attack on Crimea and its bridge came as the Russian military was working to eliminate a large Ukrainian force that infiltrated the Russian region of Kursk earlier this month.
