The Russian Aerospace Forces have tested a new anti-ballistic missile at the Sary-Shagan training range in Kazakhstan, the country’s defense ministry said on July 2. According to the statement, the missile confirmed its characteristics and fulfilled the task “striking the assigned target with a given accuracy.”
A previous test of the same type interceptor missile from the Sary-Shagan training range was reported by the Russian Defense Ministry on June 4.
In the both cases, the Russian side did not name the missile system but it is believed to be the PRS-1M interceptor missile, which protects Moscow and other strategic sites from incoming enemy missiles. According to reports, the missile can use both nuclear and conventional warheads. It can hit targets at ranges of 350 km and altitudes of 50 km. It’s set to become a part of the A-235 anti-ballistic missile system. The system in development will replace the current A-135.
