The Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported the number of targets struck by Russian Iskander-M tactical missile system. During the Special Military Operation in Ukraine, more than 1,400 targets were hit with the Iskander-M systems.
The Armed Forces of the Russian Federation are using a large range of weapons to defeat the enemy targets. The Russian military noted that depending on the tasks, either ballistic or cruise munitions of Iskander systems, which cannot be intercepted by Ukrainian air defense forces thanks to hypersonic speed. The Russian Defense Ministry recalled that the system employs several different conventional warheads, including a cluster munitions warhead, a fuel-air explosive enhanced-blast warhead, a high explosive-fragmentation warhead, an earth penetrator for bunker busting and an electromagnetic pulse device for anti-radar missions. The missile can also be equipped with nuclear warheads.
The maneuverable missile is guided by a GLONASS-aided inertial navigation system. It can be also equipped with an optical seeker with a digitized scene-mapping area correlator system for terminal guidance.
The Russian military has been using the Iskander missile system to hit high-value military targets, like gatherings of manpower and equipment, deep in Ukraine’s territory since the beginning of its special military operation with much success.
