Russia Boosts Military Cooperation With African Countries

Sputnik/ Vasiliy Batanov

On April 4, Russian Minister of Defense Sergey Shoigu and his Mozambique counterpart Atanasio M’tumuke signed an agreement simplifying visits of Russian military vessels to Mozambique ports.

According to the Russian Ministry of Defence (MOD), the countries also signed a memorandum about military-naval cooperation. The Russian MOD says the memorandum will contribute to the development of military interaction.

Meanwhile, Guinea and Russia reached the agreement of the military cooperation during the negotiations in Moscow. Shoigu affirmed that there was a stable political dialogue between Russia and Guinea: “Stance of Russia and Guinea coincide in the main international and region issues”.

Ethiopia and Russia signed an agreement of the defense cooperation. Shoigu marked that Russia appreciated “balanced and sequential negotiation manner of Ethiopia at the international scene”.

On April 2, the media outlet Somaliland Informer claimed that Russia considers establishing “a small naval and air facility in Somaliland. In turn, Russia allegedly promised to assist Somaliland in the international recognition and said that “is willing to send more military advisors, both tactical and strategic, to assist the emerging Somaliland military.”

After the successful mission in Syria, Russia continues to increase its influence in the Middle East region and in Africa. Thus, Moscow is becoming an attractive partner for regional powers with anti-American orientation in their foreign in dependence policy.
