On October 13, Iranian President Hassan Rouhani said during a live speech that Iran will stay in the nuclear deal only if it serves its interests. Rouhani also said that US president Donald Trump speech that he announced during it the new anti-Iran strategy was full of “insults and fake accusations”.
“No president can revoke an international deal … Iran will continue to respect it as long as it serves our interests,” Rouhani said, according to Reuters news agency.
Rouhani also stressed that Iran will not renegotiate the nuclear deal with the US. The Iranian president also said that the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC) will continue its activity, and even braised its rule in the region. The IRGC was recently designated by the US government as a terrorist organization as a part of the new US strategy against Iran.
“The Iranian nation has not and will never bow to any foreign pressure… Iran’s deal cannot be renegotiated …The IRGC has always protected our nation against terrorists … It will continue to help oppressed nations in the region,” Said the Iranian president.
Meanwhile, Iran Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said in a letter to EU Foreign Policy Chief Federica Mogherini that Washington’s behavior towards the nuclear deal “threatened to render the entire bargain meaningless” according to the UK-based Middle East Eye news outlet.
“Iran cannot afford to keep implementing the deal unilaterally while a key participant persists in its systematic violation of key provisions of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action known as the JCPOA by invoking irrelevant, extraneous and unfounded excuses … The agreement proved that even the most complex of global issues can be resolved through dialogue, negotiation and constructive engagement,” Zarif told Mogherini in the letter according to Middle East Eye.
The new anti-Iran policy adopted by the Trump administration will not likely effect the nuclear deal, as long as Iran still has the support of the EU, Russia and China. In fact, Trump attempts to harm the deal might end up with de-facti excluding the US from a deal that’s accepted by most of the world including the main US allies in NATO.
Moreover, many experts said that Trump new strategy against Iran already caused a harm to the White House credibility. Now any power will have much more reasons to hesitate before making a deal with the US over any sensitive issue.
