On July 5, the U.S. Ain al-Asad military base in the Iraqi Anbar province came under rocket attack.

According to the initial report by the Spokesman for Operation Inherent Resolve Col. Wayne Marotto, three rockets targeted the territory of the base causing no casualties, only the material damage.

According to the sources close to Iranian-baked militants, not 3 but 8 107-mm rockets landed on the Ain al-Assad base.

Iranian-backed groups were likely behind the attack. Last year, they stepped up their operations against US forces in response to the assassination of Abu Mahdi al-Muhandis, Deputy-Commander of Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units, and Commander of Iran’s Quds Force, Qassim Soleimani.

Car that was reportedly used to launch missiles that targeted the Ain al-Assad base.

The Ain al-Assad Air Base hosting U.S. troops was targeted on several occasions in the last few months. The last such attack took place on June 20.

The attack came a day after a US convoy was subject to an IED attack the Baghdad governorate.

The escalation between the U.S. forces and Iranian-backed factions in Iraq and Syria was caused by U.S. airstrikes against Iraq’s Popular Mobilization Units in the Iraqi-Syrian border on June 27th. The next day rocket fire targeted U.S. military base near Omar oil field in Wyria’s deir Ezzor. On July 2, Iraqi security forces foiled a rocket attack on U.S. Camp Victory in Baghdad.

The last attack came amid reports of another attack on U.S. forces near Omar oil field that were denied by U.S. military spokesman.
