On December 27, a senior member of the Popular Mobilization Units and his two bodyguards were killed in an attack on his house in the countryside of the Iraqi city of Mosul.
According to reports, unidentified gunmen stormed the house of Abu Hashem al-Badrani at the village of Abu Jarada the countryside of Mosul. Then, the gunmen fled to al Jazira region, a desert border region between Syria and Iraq.
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi announced liberation of Mosul from ISIS on July 10, 2017. The city was captured by the terrorist group in in 2014.
Despite the formal liberation of the city, the security situation in the area remains complicated. ISIS sleeper cells still active in the city and its countryside. Furthermore, units of ISIS still operate in the desert area near the border, west of Mosul.
