PKK Continues To Inflict Losses On Turkish Army In Northern Iraq (Video)

On October 28, the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK) released footage documenting a recent attack on the Turkish military in the Kurdistan Region in northern Iraq.

The footage shows a fortified Turkish post on Amedi hilltop being targeted with an anti-tank guided missile. The Kurdish guerilla group claimed that the attack, which took place on October 11, claimed the lives of four Turkish soldiers.

The Turkish military has been conducting an operation against the PKK in Kurdistan since mid-April. The operation, codenamed Claw-Lock, is meant to end the group’s presence in the areas of Metina, Zap and Avashin Basyan.

The PKK escalated its attacks in response to Operation Claw-Lock, inflicting some serious human and material losses on the Turkish military.

The Turkish Ministry of National Defense acknowledged on October 27 that another soldier was killed by PKK fighters in Kurdistan. The new casualty brought to 59 the number of Turkish troops killed in the northern Iraqi region since the beginning of the operation.

Turkey has been also facing some serious political pressure over Operation Claw-Lock. The Iraqi government has already condemned the operation and called on Ankara to withdrew its forces from the country.

Despite of the mounting losses, the political pressure and the lack of any real achievement, the Turkish operation will likely go on until the end of the year.
