The Pentagon has shown a video of shooting down of a Su-22 warplane belonging to the Syrian Arab Air Force (SAAF) and an Iranian-made Shahed-129 unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) in Syria last June.
The Su-22 warplane was downed by a US Navy F/A-18E multirole fighter in southern Raqqah on June 18 after the US-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) claimed that the Su-22 carried out airstrikes on some target near the SDF. The incident took place south the SDF-held town of Tabqah where government forces, supported by the SAAF, were advancing against ISIS.
According to the recent reports, the Su-22’s pilot is still missing.
The Shahed-129 UCAV was downed by an American F-15E multirole fighter in southeastern Syria on June 20. The Shahed-129 UCAV was providing an air cover for government forces advancing near the US garrison of At Tanf on the Syrian-Iraqi border. The US-led coalition had set up this garrison in an attempt to build a buffer zone between Syria and Iraq. However, this effort failed.
