A Palestinian fighter single-handedly wounded seven Israelis during hours-long clashes in the occupied West Bank on March 22.
The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said that the attack began when the fighter opened fire at a minibus near the settlement of Dolev, causing no injuries. Israeli troops began a pursuit after the gunman, during which they came under fire several times.
The fighter was using a sniper rifle, and he had opened fire from behind makeshift cover in a forested area near Dolev, according to an initial IDF probe. He also moved between several positions that he had set up in the area, which he reached overnight.
The IDF said it scrambled an attack helicopter and drones in its search for the fighter. The helicopter carried out gunfire in the area where the fighter was believed to be. However, he fired several more shots toward Israeli troops at the same time.
Later, the elite Duvdevan unit was dispatched to the scene in an attempt to locate the fighter, during which the commandos also engaged in clashes with him.
Around five hours after the initial attack, the fighter was finally located by the IDF. The helicopter carried out a strike against him. He was killed on the spot.
Hebrew media reported that seven people were hurt in the incident, including one in critical condition and two in serious condition. The attacker is yet to be identified.
The daring shooting attack came amid Israel’s war against the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.
The IDF and Israeli security services stepped up operations throughout the occupied West Bank after the start of the war in Gaza, killing more than 300 Palestinians and arresting many others. However, the security situation in Israel is only getting worse.
