Iran launched a devastating missile strike against targets in Israel on June 22 morning, just a few hours after being attacked by the United States.
The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) said that at least 27 ballistic missiles were launched from Iran at Israel in two waves. The first wave included 22 missiles, and the second was made up of five, according to the military’s assessments.
Multiple impacts were reported in the cities of Tel Aviv and Nes Tziona in central Israel, as well as in the northern city of Haifa, with footage showing much destruction.
Israel’s Magen David Adom ambulance service said that 16 people were wounded in the missile strike, including one in a moderate condition. Later, the IDF said that an impact in Haifa that wounded at least three people was likely caused by a faulty interceptor missile.
The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) announced that the strike targeted, and for the first time, Ben Gurion Airport near Tel Aviv.
“The twentieth wave of Operation Honest Promise 3 began using a combination of long-range liquid and solid fuel missiles with devastating warhead power,” the guards said in a statement quoted by Fars news agency.
The targets included the airport, a “biological research center,” logistics bases, and various layers of command and control centers, it added.
The IRGC also said that it used for the first time the Kheibar medium-range ballistic missile, which has a range of 2,000 kilometers and can carry a warhead weighing as much as 1,800 kg.
Just hours before the devastating missile strike, U.S. joined the Israeli attack on Iran. American bombers and warships attacked the Fordow, Natanz and Isfahan nuclear sites in the Islamic Republic. Tehran is yet to respond to the unprecedented attack.
Iran has launched more than 450 ballistic missiles and 1,000 suicide drones since the start of the Israeli attack on its nuclear program, codenamed Operation Rising Lion on June 13, according to the IDF. The retaliatory attacks, codenamed Operation True Promise 3, claimed the lives of 24 people and left more than 500 others wounded in Israel.
