On May 3, four fighters of the Turkish-backed Sham Legion were killed and two others were injured when an IED hit their vehicle on the road between the city of Idlib and the town of Maarrat Misrin, according to the Syrian pro-opposition news outlet Baladi News.
No group has claimed responsibility for the assassination yet. However, Syrian opposition sources believe that ISIS cells may be behind the incident as the Sham Legion does not have any problems with any other group.
In a related development, a booby-trapped car exploded near the center of the International Rescue Committee (IRC) in the town of al-Dana in the northern Idlib countryside. The Syrian pro-opposition news outlet Enab Baladi reported that six civilians had been killed and dozens others had been injured in the attack.
The main target of the attack was likely the IRC which works closely with the US government. This allowed some local activists to suggest that ISIS cells could be behind this incident.
More than 29 militants and civilians were killed in a wave of assassinations that hits Idlib governorate between April 26 and 30. According to Syrian opposition activists, these attacks are aimed at inflaming the internal fighting among the different armed groups in Idlib, especially between Hay’at Tahrir al-Sham (HTS) and the Syrian Liberation Front (SLF).
