Never before seen video footage from the recent attack on Iran revealed that Israel used the Rampage air-to-surface guided missile in a massive strike on the heart of the Islamic Republic’s capital, Tehran, possibly causing civilian casualties.
Israel launched the attack on June 13, stating that its goal was to cripple Iran’s nuclear program. A ceasefire was suddenly announced on June 24, just two days after the United States joined the war by attacking three key nuclear sites.
The undated footage, which surfaced online on July 2, shows three munitions, including at least one that appears to be a Rampage missile, hitting Tehran. The missile in question struck a parking lot, while the other two munitions hit multi-story buildings. Many civilians can be seen walking in the targeted area.
The Rampage, officially unveiled by Israel Aerospace Industries (IAI) and Elbit Systems , is an air-launched version of the guided artillery rocket EXTRA. The 306 mm missile, which weights around 150 kg, is typically armed with a multi-explosively formed penetrator warhead.
The missile features a GPS-aided inertial navigation system with anti-jamming capabilities. It is reported to have a circular error probable of ten meters.
With a top speed of Mach 1.6 and a range of up to 250 kilometers, the standoff missile was especially designed to hit high-value targets such as radar installations, communications centers, weapons storage facilities and airfields while the launch aircraft remains out of range of air defenses.
The strike seen in the fresh footage likely took place in the last days of the war, when Israel announced that it had struck so-called “regime targets” in Tehran.
According to the official Islamic Republic News Agency, the Israeli attack on Iran claimed the lives of 935 Iranians, including 38 children and 132 women.
Iran retaliated to the Israeli attack by launching over 500 ballistic missiles and around 1,100 suicides drones at targets in Israel. The retaliatory attacks killed 28 people, all but one of them civilians, and wounded over 3,000 in Israel, per Israeli health officials.
