This map provides a general look at the military situation in the Syrian area of Afrin on February 9, 2018. The Turkish Armed Forces (TAF) and the Free Syrian Army (FSA) are still struggling in an attempt to break the YPG defense north of the city of Afrin. The YPG had repelled attacks by the TAF and the FSA in the areas of Sheikh al-Hadid and Bulbul inflicting casualties to the Turkey-led forces.
On February 9, the TAF’s general staff said in a statement that 1,062 ‘terrorists’ have been ‘neutralized’ since the start of Ankara’s Operation Olive Branch. According to the statement, the Turkish Air Force destroyed 19 targets and ‘neutralized’ 34 ‘terrorists’.
Ankara describes the YPG as a terrorist group, the Syrian branch of the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK).
