This map provides a general look at the military situation in Syria and Iraq on September 1, 2017. The Iraqi Army and the Popular Mobilization Units have liberated the city of Tal Afar and its countryside from ISIS. Syrian government forces, supported by the Russian Aerospace Forces, have made large gains against ISIS along the Palmyra-Deir Ezzor highway and captured the al-Birshri triangle and the al-Bishri Mount north of the highway. The Syrian Army and its allies have also made more gains against ISIS in the eastern Hama countryside.
