The Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) have finally responded to recent Turkish attacks on its areas in northern and northeastern Syria.
On April 22, the SDF shelled a checkpoint of Turkish-backed militants in the outskirts of the town of Marea in the Turkish-occupied part of the northern Aleppo countryside. Four people, most likely militants, were wounded as a result of the shelling.
An Otokar Cobra II armored vehicle of the Turkish military was spotted at the targeted checkpoint. However, no Turkish causalities were reported.

Later, fighters of the SDF destroyed a BMC Kirpi II MRAP [Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected] vehicle of the Turkish military in the outskirts of Marea with an anti-tank guided missile. Several Turkish service members were reportedly killed or wounded.
The Turkish military and its proxies responded to the attacks by shelling a number of SDF-held towns and villages in the northern Aleppo countryside.

The SDF’s attacks came following a series of Turkish artillery and drone strikes that killed and wounded several members of the group as well as civilians.
One recent Turkish drone strike claimed the lives of three members of the Women’s Protection Units, a key faction of the SDF.
Turkey could use the SDF’s attacks on Marea as a pretext to launch a new military operation against the group in northern and northeastern Syria. The Turkish military and its proxies have been reportedly making preparations for such an operation for nearly a year now.
