Early on December 2, a series of Israeli strikes targeted positions in the outskirts of the Syrian capital, Damascus, according to the Syrian Arab News Agency.

Citing a military official, the state-run agency said that the strikes came from the direction of the occupied Golan Heights and that Syrian air defenses shot most of the missiles down. The strikes resulted in only “material losses,” the unnamed official said.

Several interceptions were observed over Damascus and large blasts were heard near the town of Set Zaynab to the south of Damascus, where Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps and Lebanese Hezbollah are known to be present and active. No casualties were reported, however.

Israel escalated its attacks on Syria significantly since the outbreak of the war with the Hamas Movement and other Palestinian armed factions in the Gaza Strip.

On November 26, a reported Israeli attack hit the international airport in Damascus and put it out of commission, just hours after the airport resumed flights following a month-long hiatus after previous Israeli strikes.

Israel has carried out hundreds of strikes against Syria in recent years, often targeting Hezbollah and other Iranian-backed forces, but it rarely acknowledges or discusses the operations. The war-torn country has largely refrained from responding to Israel’s repeated attacks in an attempt to avoid more escalation.
