The Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on September 28 that the head of a Hamas Movement network in southern Syria was killed in an overnight strike.
In a statement, the military said that Ahmed Muhammad Fahd was responsible for directing attacks on troops and against Israel, mostly with rocket fire on the occupied Syrian Golan Heights.
“Fahad was eliminated while he was planning to carry out another terror attack in the immediate time frame,” the statement reads.
The strike was carried out by fighter jets in the southern region of Syria overnight, according to the IDF, which didn’t elaborate.
Syrian media said that Fahd and his wife were killed in the early morning after an Israeli strike hit their house in the town of Bait Saber in the governorate of al-Qunitra. Another man was reportedly wounded by the strike.
The IDF intensified its strikes on Syria following the outbreak of the Israeli war against Hamas in the Gaza Strip last October. Since then, several rocket attacks from southern Syria targeted the Golan Heights with the movement and other Palestinian armed factions being blamed.
The deadly strikes on southern Syria came amid a major Israeli escalation against Hezbollah in Lebanon which began earlier this week.
Just a day earlier, five Syrian troops were killed and others were wounded early in an Israeli strike that targeted a military site close to the town of Kfeir Yabous in the governorate of Rif Dimashq. Syria acknowledged the attack, but didn’t respond.
