The 205th Reserve Armored Brigade moved into southern Lebanon and began destroying Hezbollah tunnels, defensive positions and other enemy infrastructure, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced on October 11.
In a statement ,the IDF said that “the brigade eliminated a number of terrorists and destroyed dozens of terrorist targets from the air, from the ground and with artillery.”
“Today we will remove the threat of attack on our country,” said Brigade commander Colonel Yoav Scheider in a radio message to his troops before they move into Lebanon. “This is our mission, this is what we are tasked with.”
“We have a difficult battle ahead,” he noted, stressing that “the mission is clear, important and urgent.”
The brigade will be joining the 36th Division and the 98th Division, which have been operating against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon for over a week now.
The IDF has described the ground operations in southern Lebanon, which began on September 30, as “limited, localized, and targeted raids,” with the goal of demolishing Hezbollah’s infrastructure in the border area. So far, the movements of Israeli troops are still limited to areas along the border line.
In recent days, Hezbollah stepped up its attacks against Israeli troops operating in southern Lebanon and launched more rockets at targets in northern and central Israel.
On October 11, a Thai worker was killed and another was wounded in the settlement of Yir’on along the border with Lebanon in an attack attributed to Hezbollah, Following a preliminary investigation, the IDF said that the two were struck by fallen munition that exploded in the area.
The clashes on the Lebanese-Israeli border first broke out after the start of the war in the Gaza Strip, with Hezbollah launching attacks in support of the Palestinian enclave. Israel escalated its attacks on Lebanon starting from September 17 and on September 27 it assassinated the Secretary-General of Hezbollah, Hassan Nassrallah.
The IDF officially announced the launch of a limited ground operation against Hezbollah in southern Lebanon on September 30.
So far, the confrontation has resulted in 29 civilian deaths in Israel and the occupied Syrian Golan Heights as well as the deaths of at least 34 soldiers and security officers. On the Lebanese side, more than 2,100 people have been killed, including more than 500 members of Hezbollah.
