The Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI), an umbrella group of Iran-backed armed factions, announced on October 23 that it had launched five more attacks against Israel in support of the Gaza Strip and Lebanon.

The group said in separate statements that it had launched suicide drones at two “vital targets” in the occupied Syrian Golan Heights, two others in the southernmost Israeli city of Eilat and another in the central region of the country.

The attacks were carried out “in response to the massacres committed by the usurping entity [Israel] against civilians, including children, women, and the elderly” in Gaza and Lebanon, the group said, vowing that “operations against enemy strongholds will continue at an increasing pace.”

Two videos released by the group showed the launch of what appears to be multiple Iranian-made Shahed-101 suicide drones.

In the early morning, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced that it had intercepted a pair of drones off the coast of Eilat. A statement from the military said that the drones “came from the east,” a term it usually used to refer to attacks launched from Iraq.

The IDF said later that another drone was shot down over Syria. The drone was also launched “from the east,” according to a statement by the military.

The IRI began carrying out attacks against Israel as well as against United States forces in Iraq and neighboring Syria last October in response to the Israeli all-out war on Gaza. In September, the group escalated its attacks against Israel in response to Israel’s ongoing aerial campaign and ground operations against Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Israel has not openly responded to the IRI’s attacks yet. However, it was blamed for several strikes that targeted Iran-backed armed factions along the Syrian-Iraqi border and near the Syrian capital, Damascus. Iraqi fighters and commanders were killed in some of these strikes.
