The Israeli military announced on October 3 that it had foiled an attempt to smuggle dozens of guns from southern Lebanon into Israel.

“A smuggling attempt of 40 guns from Lebanon into Israel was thwarted,” the Israeli military said on Twitter.

According to the army, the smuggling attempt, which took place last September, was foiled thanks to a field observer from the 869th battalion who spotted two suspects acting suspiciously on the Lebanese side of the separation fence and alerted troops there.

At least one suspect was arrested in Israel. Israeli security forces are now questioning the suspect and investigating the smuggling attempt.

The Lebanese side of the fence is controlled by Hezbollah. Units of the Lebanese military and the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFL) are also deployed there.

While Hezbollah could be behind the smuggling attempt, trafficking of arms and narcotics is a common thing  along the separation fence with Israel.
