A senior member of the Islamic Group, the Lebanese branch of the Muslim Brotherhood, was killed in an Israeli drone strike in southern Lebanon on April 26, the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) announced.

In a statement, the IDF said that the member, Mosab Khalaf, “led and advanced many attacks” from Lebanon against Israeli targets, mostly in the occupied Lebanese Shebaa Farms area.

Khalaf was also coordinating attacks with Hamas Movement’s branch in Lebanon, the IDF added, noting that he was targeted while driving on a highway near the town of Meidoun, some 20 kilometers from the Israeli border.

The IDF said that his “elimination was carried out to cause a blow to the terror organization’s abilities to advance and carry out terror acts that it has planned recently against the State of Israel in the northern border area.”

The military wing of the Islamic Group, the al-Fajr Forces, mourned Khalaf and another member Bilal Muhammad Khalaf, in a statement, describing them both as commanders.

The assassination came after Hezbollah fighters ambushed an Israeli military convoy in the occupied Lebanon Kfarchouba hills late on April 25. Two vehicles were destroyed by guided missiles as well as rockets and artillery fire. An Israeli Arab man working as a truck driver was killed in the ambush. Video footage of the ambush was released by the group’s Military Media.

Hezbollah responded to the assassination later in the day by firing dozens of “Katyusha” rockets at the Habushit military site and the 810th Hermon Brigade headquarters in Maale Golani Barracks in the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights.

The IDF said that a barrage of some 30 rockets were launched from Lebanon at Mount Hermon. Some of the rockets were intercepted by the Iron Dome air defense system, while others apparently hit open areas. There are no reports of injuries in the attack. Sirens did not sound in any of the targeted sites.

A series of Israeli strikes later hit southern Lebanon and on April 27 Hezbollah mourned two of its fighters, saying in two separate statements that they were killed “on the road to Jerusalem”.

Since the outbreak of the Israeli war on Gaza last October, Hezbollah and its allies began launching near-daily attacks against the IDF in support of Hamas and other Palestinian armed factions in the Strip.

So far, the clashes have resulted in nine civilian deaths on the Israeli side, as well as the deaths of at least 11 IDF soldiers and reservists. On the Lebanese side, more than 400 people have been killed, including 271 fighters of Hezbollah and at least 70 civilians.
