On the morning of June 3, aircraft of the Israeli Air Force launched airstrikes on the outskirts of the Syrian city of Aleppo located in the northern part of the country. Syrian state media confirmed the attack, claiming that it resulted in casualties and some damage.
According to the Syrian Arab News Agency, “a number of civilians were martyred in an Israeli missile aggression that targeted a number of points in vicinity of Aleppo city.” The missile strikes were launched at about 00:20 a.m. The SANA reported that the Syrian air defense managed to shot down several Israeli missiles, without clarifying their exact number.
Israel did not immediately acknowledge the strikes and rarely does when it comes to Syria. The targets are believed to be Iranian-linked assets and weapons depots.
The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that according to the latest reports, 16 Iranian-backed militia members of Syrian and non-Syrian nationality were killed as a result of the attack. Some of the wounded victims are reportedly in critical condition and the death toll may increase. According to the SOHR, the target of the strikes was “a copper smelting plant and a weapons warehouse of the Iranian-backed militias between Hayan and Al-Tamourah towns in the northern countryside of Aleppo.” The monitoring group added that “the explosions came in parallel with a bombardment with high-explosive volcano missiles, launched from the western countryside of Aleppo, on the positions of HTS and the factions in Kafar Amah and Nuran in the western countryside of Aleppo.”
The latest Israeli attack in Syria took place on May 29, when a series of strikes hit Syria’s central region as well as the coastal town of Baniyas. According to SANA, a child was killed and ten other civilians were wounded. LINK
Israel has significantly escalated its attacks on Syria since the outbreak of the war in the Palestinian enclave of Gaza Strip, targeting Syrian military sites as well as personnel of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, Hezbollah and other forces of the so-called Axis of Resistance.
